With the presence of a lesion, vulvar infections such as a genital wart virus or vaginosis are likely. White, red and hyperpigmented sores are associated with VIN and vulva cancer. There are different types of lesions; they all have their own appearances. In detection of VIN and invasive cancer a colposcopy is necessary. In younger women VIN associated with HPV is frequent and less likely to be invasive. With the presence of a lesion, vulvar infections such as a genital wart virus or vaginosis are likely.

A biopsy is required for a definite diagnosis of cancer. The types of lesions include: white; flat condyloma, which is associated with HPV, red; occur in the absence of hyperkerototic layer, the pigmented type that occur because of rapid epithelial proliferation, and less common is vascular patterns on the vulva. With the presence of a lesion, vulvar infections such as a genital wart virus or vaginosis are likely.
