Bacterial Pregnancy Vaginosis

Bacterial pregnancy vaginosis, cervical dysplasia and some other vulvar and vaginal disorders can lead to preterm labour and other complications. Regardless of symptoms, any woman that has had a premature delivery or low birth weight baby in the past should be tested for the possible presence of the infection. For pregnant women who have this infection, treatment is especially important. Bacterial pregnancy vaginosis, cervical dysplasia and some other vulvar and vaginal disorders can lead to preterm labour and other complications.

The bacteria’s that cause BV could infect the uterus and fallopian tubes, commonly called pelvic inflammatory disease. Women with this condition more often have babies born early or with low birth weight. In the US, as many as 16% of pregnant women have BV and have increased risk for complications.
