Some people can be infected for years with this infection without symptoms, while others develop symptoms right away. A microscopic protozoon called Trichomonas vaginalis causes this infection. This condition affects both men and women. Men with this infection usually have no symptoms, but can have a urethral discharge. For women the symptoms are profuse, thin, yellow vaginal discharge with a strong, unpleasant, fishy odor. Vaginal itching and burning may also be present.
