Endometrial Cells In Pap Smear

Endometrial cells in pap smear can sometimes be caused by vulvar vestibulitis or human papilloma virus. If found during Papanicolaou test in menopausal women, they may indicate carcinoma. However, the phenomenon may be due to shedding of tissues and is frequently seen in women taking hormone replacing therapy. Therefore, such results in post-menopausal women practicing HRT are unlikely to indicate cancer. Women who have revealed the presence of these tissues are often diagnosed with ASCUS and may want to undergo endocervical curettage and biopsy. Many women who are still having menses are unlikely to have cancer, as these shed tissues are normal.
