Positive pap smear test result means there are abnormal cervical cells that may require a cone biopsy, sometimes done during a colposcopy.
The outcome of a cytology examination depends upon observation of certain cellular characteristics. If deviation from the normal type for the area from which the specimen is taken, it is considered abnormal or atypical. Abnormalities range from slightly atypical (ASCUS or atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) to invasive cancer.
