Thin Prep Pap Smear

A thin prep pap smear may reveal cervical dysplasia suggested by a previous ASCUS reading. This type of test is an alternative choice to typical cytology. A slightly increased discovery of cellular anomalies over standard cytology is an advantage, thus, the risk of a false negative result is reduced. In some cases, however, specific abnormalities may be easier to identify with the standard method. A thin prep pap smear may reveal cervical dysplasia suggested by a previous ASCUS reading.

Cervical Dysplasia, ASCUS

One major advantage of this form of cytology is that a clinician can demand a HPV hybrid capture test if the usual cytology findings result in specific abnormalities. A pathologist can then conduct a more specific analysis on the original specimen, saving a repeat visit to the clinic. A thin prep pap smear may reveal cervical dysplasia suggested by a previous ASCUS reading.
