This is a scrape of cells from the walls of the cervix performed to reveal abnormalities that could be suggestive of cervical cancer. Changes in size and shape of the cells may be caused not only by cancer, but also by bacterial and viral infections, hormone imbalances, and STDs.   -

Vaginal Discharge, Vulvar Vestibulitis

Sampling should be done yearly, as cervical cells may turn cancerous spontaneously with no signs of the disorder. Besides, no test is hundred per cent accurate and a false negative result may delay necessary treatment for years. All women are advised to perform Papanicolaou tests starting from the age 18. With a negative pap smear biopsy, vaginal discharge and vulvar vestibulitis will sometimes display symptoms.
