When to get a pap smear will be determined if vaginal wart viruses have been found and may developinot cervical cancer.
Women aged 18 and older should have regular Papanicolaou tests to check for abnormal cells in the cervix and vaginal conditions. If a woman has had sexual relations sooner than at age 18, she should also have this test as part of annual pelvic examination.

Menstruating women as well as those close to menses should not have Papanicolaou test. Midcycle is considered the best time for having the procedure. Women suffering from HPV and HIV are advised to have frequent tests, as they are at higher risk for developing cervical cancer.
