ASCUS cells alone should not necessitate a LEEP procedure or cryotherapy.
The word “squamous” came from the Latin squama meaning "scale of a fish or serpent." Squamous cells are flat cells that look like fish scales. When these cells are categorized as atypical, this means the appearance is not normal. This is a medical term referring to atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance.

An important thing to remember for women with atypical squamous cells is that dysplasia does not usually progress to invasive cancer of the cervix. This category indicates some cellular irritation and one that bears repeating to see if there is any change toward dysplasia at a later time.
