Ascus Pap Smear

When the result of an ascus pap smear is determined, it means abnormal cell growth or cervical dysplasia is present and may be accompanied by urethritis. For this reason, risky surgery should be avoided until a more definitive diagnosis can be obtained with either a repeat exam or a biopsy. It is not unusual for cases like this to be read as normal by a different doctor. A Digene Hybrid Capture Test is particularly helpful in this situation. Many pathologists will grade these as normal while others will grade them as abnormal. Defined as atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, this term refers to the least abnormal grade. When the result of an ascus pap smear is determined, it means abnormal cell growth or cervical dysplasia is present and may be accompanied by urethritis.
