If performed while bleeding, pap smear tests are inaccurate and will not detect the possible causes of urethritis and vaginal discharge.
Cervical cell swabs taken during menstruation make it difficult for pathologists to discern cervical complications. Uncharacteristic cells can be masked by the blood and slough of menstruation. Therefore, an exam about 2 weeks after menstruation has stopped is optimal.
