Bethesda Pap Smear

The bethesda pap smear system was developed by CDC and NIH for classification of condyloma abnormalities on a Pap smear. This is a current classification of test results that indicate possible vaginal and cervical problems in women. After having taken a sample of cervical mucus and cells, a doctor will send it to a lab to be examined for abnormalities in size and shape. If there are no abnormalities, the results are normal. There are also atypical cells (ASCUS) that require additional tests since their origin is hard to determine. Depending on the extent of the changes in the cells, there may low- or high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion be diagnosed.
