Anal pap smear tests are used to detect dysplasia, paps are more common in diagnosing cervical dysplasia and vaginal discharge.
Abnormal cytology findings are significant among individuals with history involving the anus. Women who have cervical dysplasia and HIV infected men are at significant risk for developing cancer of the anus (women 4 times more than men) because they carry HPV-16, a high risk cancer causing form of HPV.
