With an ASCUS pap smear, virgin patients may exhibit symptoms of vulvar vestibulitis and may have indirectly acquired the virus by touching an HPV infected person. Regular cervical cancer screening is recommended for women as soon as they become sexually active or at the age of 18. Although Human Papilloma Viruses are most commonly spread sexually, the virus can sometimes be contracted indirectly such as touching an infected area on someone and then touching oneself. With an ASCUS pap smear, virgin patients may exhibit symptoms of vulvar vestibulitis and may have indirectly acquired the virus by touching an HPV infected person.

Since HPV infections is directly associated in almost all cervical oncology cases, it is important for women to visit their doctor regularly for examination. This is especially true for those who suspect they have been in direct skin-to-skin contact with an HPV infected person.
