False Positive Pap Smear

A false positive pap smear will sometimes warrant a cone biopsy, caused by penile wart viruses. Sometimes, a tissue sample obtained during the test may show abnormalities in the cells that are not truly related to cancer or other vaginal problems. Changes in the cells may be caused by inflammation of the vagina due to the use of spermicides, tampons, and vaginal creams and jellies. A false positive pap smear will sometimes warrant a cone biopsy, caused by penile wart viruses.

A few cells may look abnormal in the presence of semen and other liquids that get into female organs during ejaculation. Women should carefully plan a doctor visit and restrain from intercourse, douching, and vaginal items usage for 24 hours before the test.
