Irregular Pap Smear Results

Irregular pap smear results will sometimes come back if infections such as vulvar vestibulitis or verruca virus are present. Cells found on the surface of the cervix are usually round or flat. If there appear changes in size and shape of the cells and the tissue starts to grow confusedly, Papanicolaou test is considered abnormal, which calls for follow-up care and a close supervision. Irregular pap smear results will sometimes come back if infections such as vulvar vestibulitis or verruca virus are present.

Abnormalities in the cells are not always linked to cancer. Certain changes in the tissue may stem from inflammation caused by infections or objects present in the vagina (tampons, diaphragms, etc.). Once the irritant is removed, the cells return to normal. Irregular pap smear results will sometimes come back if infections such as vulvar vestibulitis or verruca virus are present.
