The occurance of a miscarriage 12 weeks into the pregnancy is fairly common, however any contributing factors should be detected and will show up as ASCUS in a pap smear. Chromosomal abnormalities represent the single most frequent cause for miscarriages. A spontaneous abortion is the loss of pregnancy, where the fetus cannot survive or is born before the 20th week of pregnancy. It occurs in about 15-20 per cent of all recognized pregnancies. The occurance of a miscarriage 12 weeks into the pregnancy is fairly common, however any contributing factors should be detected and will show up as ASCUS in a pap smear.

Most of the miscarriages occur in the first 13 weeks, or first trimester. At 35 the chance of miscarrying rises to one in four. Most early pregnancy losses are due to genetics and cannot be prevented.
