Very often, the cause of miscarriage is unknown, but urethritis, genital wart and other genital disorders of the woman are not related to it. In general, miscarriages are more common in women over 35 years old and in pregnancies involving more than one fetus. Studies suggest that pregnancy will occur in at least 60 percent of natural cycles in fertile couples. Once the baby has a heartbeat, it is usually visible on ultrasound at around 6 weeks, the chance of miscarrying decreases significantly. The embryo may develop for a little while but have abnormalities that make it impossible for it to continue to survive and it stops developing before it has a heartbeat.
