After abortion infertility is possible in some cases; minor vulvar and genital disorders, such as venereal wart don't usually affect the ability to conceive. Examination for Chlamydia is now routine in most hospitals and clinics and, if necessary, patients will be treated before abortions are carried out. Inflammation of the Fallopian tubes and ovaries caused by the Chlamydia organism is the most common cause of sterility following abortions. For example, overzealous currettage can damage the lining of the uterus and lead to permanent sterility. Long-term physical complications from abortions may surface later.
