This tumor develops in the pleura, a protective membrane, which covers lungs and the wall of the chest cavity, and in the peritoneum, which lines the walls of the abdomen and covers its organs. The tumor is caused by tiny particles of asbestos, which are inhaled or swallowed, often unknowingly.
