Friable Asbestos

Friable asbestos should be utilized very carefully, as exposure to small particles of this mineral can be the cause of asbestosis, mesothelioma and other disorders. Until the 1970s, the crocidolite and amosite (amphibole) varieties were widely used in construction, ship-building and finishing. These varieties are far more dangerous than the chrysotile type, because they consist of highly penetrative needle-shaped fibers, which affect lung tissues in a more aggressive fashion. Nowadays, amphiboles are excluded from production, and manufacturers have moved over to chrysotile. However, many old products contain amphibole fibers, and those may be released into the air when these products are exposed to physical impacts. Residents of old homes must bear this in mind when planning major repair works.
