Hpv human papillomavirus is often treated with cryosurgery or a cone biopsy (which also removes affected tissue). There are only a few of the 100 identified types of this virus that cause genital warts. Other types of the virus found only in the genital area, not related to genital warts, can cause abnormal cell changes, usually on a female’s cervix and are linked to cancer. The viruses that are linked to dysplasia and cancers, primarily in squamous cells are the types 16 and 18. Commonly found in the uterine cervix. If untreated, cervical dysplasia can become cancerous. More recently this virus has been linked to cancers such as skin, lung eye, and esophagus.
