Human papillomavirus is a double-stranded, circular DNA virus enclosed in an icosahedral capsid and comprising 72 capsomers. Some of these strains are called "high-risk" types. They may cause abnormal Pap tests and also lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. Others are called "low-risk" types, and they may cause mild Pap test abnormalities or genital warts.
