A positive hpv cancer or atypia findings can lead to election of diagnotic testing with colposcopy and biopsy as well as repeat Pap smear. The human papilloma viruses are recognized as a major cause of cervical cancers. These viruses are also attributed to cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus, penis and some cancers of the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat that includes the soft palate, the base of the tongue, and tonsils). With over 100 types of the human papilloma viruses, some are referred to as “low-risk” viruses because they rarely develop into cancer, and the viruses that can lead to cancers are referred to as “high-risk”. Both cause the growth of abnormal cells. The sexually transmitted types may lead to cancer.
