Condoms are not protection against infection. Some doctors think it is less contagious than the genital warts you can see. Little is known about subclinical HPV and how contagious it is. The types of HPV that cause genital warts are usually spread by skin-to-skin contact. When warts are present the HPV infection is considered active, when the warts are gone the infection is latent in the skin cells - it may or may not be contagious at this time.
