Human Pap

The human pap illoma virus (HPV) causes the genital wart, and is linked to other infections such as vaginosis and urinary infection. Genital human papilloma virus is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. There are about 100 strains of the virus, affecting both males and females. Certain HPV types can cause abnormal Pap smears and are associated with cervical, vulvar, anal, and penile cancers. The HPV test can detect the presence of HPV before the changes in the cells become visible. The tests can find high-risk types of HPV. If the test shows a definite pre-cancerous abnormality, the doctor decides what treatment will be the most effective to prevent cancer from developing.
