Mostly contracted through sexual activities, HSV2 advances to outbreaks exhibited by lesions in and around the genitalia, anus, or sometimes the mouth. (HSV1 usually is associated within the mouth called cold sores.) HSV can remain hidden in nerve cells without visible signs but still be contagious during viral shedding.

During the asymptomatic phase the virus is not always active, thus, it is virtually undetectable when it is inactive.
