Genital Herpes Test

HSV diagnostics include: HIV antibody serology, HSV Western blot analyses, HSV isolation in cell culture, HSV DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction enzyme analyses, cellular immunology studies and mucosal immunity studies. A viral culture on scrapped/aspirated lesion sample is poor (frequent false negatives); a negative cannot confirm no viral presence.

A serology measures immune response antibodies against the virus. Although highly sensitive, it only measures exposure to HSV and not the active presence of the virus. A type specific test, glycoprotein G, is a relatively new FDA approved technology with accuracy comparable to the POCkit, HerpesSelect, and Western Blot technologies.
