HSV neonatal risk is comparatively small compared to other pregnancy risks as demonstrated by its low rate in spite of the high prevalence. Although the risk is small for neonatal HSV infection, the consequences can be tragic. Antiviral medication can deter permanent damage in nearly half of treated infants. For others, serious neurological damage, mental retardation or death is likely. Concern arises from the terrible outcome rather than risk levels for neonatal infection.
