A first episode generally involves cervical and urethral signs of pain, itching, dysuria, vaginal and urethral discharge, and tender enlarged lymph nodes for females. Vesicles (blisters), pustules, and ulcers may follow in subsequent phases. Plus, other early symptoms emerging may be fever, headache, malaise, and muscle aches. Many females who contract HSV show mild (hardly noticeable) symptoms. Others may misdiagnose symptoms as rashes, sweat bumps, irritations, or allergies. 1-4 episodes are expected during the next year decreasing over time however, poorer prognosis exists for women on HAART (therapy resistance) or co-infected with HPV (higher cervical cancer risk).
