Genital herpes medications can only help reduce or lessen the severity of genital herpes attacks, and won't treat condyloma vuruses. There are several tests that help to discover the presence of the virus. These are: the swab test and the Western Blot test that can also be used to determine if an outbreak of symptoms is due to long-standing or new infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2. The second test can distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 unlike the swab test. This test may be useful in diagnosing the virus in people who have a previous history of oral cold sores. And still the results are not always clear-cut because HSV-1 can cause the virus as well as cold sores and HSV-2 can cause cold sores as well as the virus.
