The second test can distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 unlike the swab test. This test may be useful in diagnosing the virus in people who have a previous history of oral cold sores. And still the results are not always clear-cut because HSV-1 can cause the virus as well as cold sores and HSV-2 can cause cold sores as well as the virus.
