The HPV genitial wart viruses can be detected with a pap smear and may be treated depending on the severity with cryosurgery or a cone biopsy of the area infected with the venereal wart symptoms. HPV infection can appear as visible warts on the vagina or the vulva (the outer part of the female genitals) or simply as an abnormal Pap smear test result. However, a Pap smear cannot be relied upon to detect all HPV infections. A test designed specifically to detect HPV is the HPV DNA digene test. Despite its contribution to the decreased incidence of cervical cancer, cytology has shortcomings that cause both false negative and false positive results, leading to missed disease or to unnecessary patient anxiety and over-treatment. The symptoms of HPV infection can appear weeks, months, or even years after initial infection, so it is possible to become infected without being aware of it.
