The genetal wart viruses, members of the human papillomavirus group, cause condyloma acuminata and common warts. As the HPV virus is the most common sexually transmitted virus and approaches chlamydia infection as the most common sexually transmitted disease overall. Research has uncovered the major role it plays in cancer of the cervix. There are more than 70 different types of HPV, 23 of which are specific to the genital tract of both males and females. The virus is also one of the most common causes of abnormal Pap smears that help to detect the presence of the virus in the cells. All these 23 viruses can be divided into two types (high risk and low risk) that indicate the chances of developing cervical cancer.
