A genital vagina wart and ASCUS are caused by different strains of HPV. Sometimes a biopsy or a small piece of tissue is taken to confirm dysplasia. With a pap smear that shows repeated changes in the virus or at any time shows dysplasia a further examination called a colposcopy will be recommended. If a woman has HPV virus changes on her pap test, she needs to monitor the condition. Women that have visible symptoms of HPV aren’t necessarily in danger of dysplasia, because the strains in this particular virus that show symptoms don’t cause serious abnormalities in the cervix.
