Any genital lesion can be detected with a colposcopy exam; a penile wart is diagnosed visually. Recurrences of genital warts are usually not new infections, but reactivation of the dormant virus. Once the virus is present in the skin, HPV will remain dormant until and unless a person's immune system stops suppressing the virus. That is mainly because the virus involves the entire genital area and can be spread by skin-to-skin contact. Condoms are not effective. There is no effective way of avoiding transmission of this virus. Any genital lesion can be detected with a colposcopy exam; a penile wart is diagnosed visually.
