The main cause of genital wart and a verruca is HPV, which often has no overt symptoms; abnormal vaginal discharge is usually not a symptom of genital warts. Condoms do not protect either party against infection. When there are visible symptoms the virus is at its most contagious stage. When the virus in contracted in the vagina, surrounding skin, or the cervix, it can either remain dormant for any length of time, or multiply and develop visible symptoms. It can enter the body through microscopic tears of the skin, vagina, or cervix. HPV needs moisture and can’t survive outside the body for any length of time. Catching this virus through soiled clothing or shared sex objects is unlikely. Sexual contact is the primary transmission of HPV.
