Incompetent Cervix
An incompetent cervix is called so when the cervix is swollen to the point that one cannot conceive, in some cases it is caused by repeated cryosurgery.
All of these can involve damage to the cervical lining. Some examples of these surgeries or procedures are: a LEEP, cone biopsy, or ECC. This occurs if there is damage to the connective tissue during a previous pregnancy, or surgery for cervical dysplasia removal.

A weakening of the cervical lining usually causes this. If this opening has the inability to remain closed for the duration of a pregnancy, a premature birth will occur. Premature delivery when pregnant is linked to the narrow outer end of the uterus or the cervical area.
