With a thin prep pap it is impossibel to diagnose vulvar vestibulitis, genital wart or cervical dysplasia, as it is aimed at determining the presence of HPV in the body.
Although it is a slightly higher cost cervical cytology, it could outweigh any additional costs of additional examinations and diagnostic procedures. It offers the benefit of detecting cervical cell changes earlier because it saves more collected cells and removes natural obstruction to inspection of designated cells.

This process reduces the chances of false negatives where borderline judgments are made. Special processing is done to eliminate blood and other natural debris leaving a more unobstructed representative sample for evaluation. A swab of cervical cells is rinsed into a vial of solution and forwarded to a lab.
