An abnormalpaptest doesn't necessarily mean that the patient has cervical cancer, but a colposcopy exam is required to make a proper diagnosis and avoid lichen sclerosis and other complications.
These procedures give a better look at the cervix and allow the doctor to take a sample or atypical tissue and send it for further analysis. If the results are positive, the doctor may want to perform another examination or use a colposcopy and biopsy.

The problem can be minor and heal by its own, like mild dysplasia, irritation and LGSIL or very serious and requiring immediate treatment, like severe dysplasia and cervical cancer. A positive result means that something is wrong with your cervix.
